At first the company participated in underground tunneling and other civil engineering projects.  Later it extended the scope of its services when Gerry Hatch joined the company in January 1958. It became known as Hatch in 1962.

In 1996 Hatch began its expansion by buying several engineering companies including Billiton Engineering, Rescan Mining, BHP Engineering, Kaiser Engineers, Acres International and MEK Engenharia. By 2005 the joint interest billing of the company was about 700 million Canadian Dollars.

The company's clients are 20 largest international mining and metallurgical companies including Alcan, Alcoa, BHP, Barrick Gold, BlueScope, Xstrata (formerly Falconbridge), Vale (formerly Inco) and Rio Tinto.
